Pulitzer and Hearst exaggerated the sinking of the USS Maine in order to provoke the US government to go to war with Spain. In turn the US had a decisive victory over Spain and annexed Cuba. The US installed Right Wing dictators and placed Charles Edward Magoon the governor of Cuba. This then lead to a revolution turning Cuba into the communist state we see today lead by the Castro family since 1959.
