The decline in the U.S. bat population has reached critical proportions. Since 2006, more than six million bats in 33 states hav
kozerog [31]

Significant historic bat declines over the last century were blamed on agricultural intensification, loss of habitat and roosts through development and exclusion from buildings. Today's main threats include land use practices, climate change, pollution, development and infrastructure, and human disturbance.

What is white-nose syndrome caused by?

White-nose syndrome is caused by a fungus, Pseudogymnoascus destructans, that infects skin of the muzzle, ears, and wings of hibernating bats.

Can humans get white-nose syndrome?

Thousands of people have visited affected caves and mines since White-nose Syndrome (WNS) was first observed, and there have been no reported human illnesses attributable to WNS. We are still learning about WNS, but we know of no risk to humans from contact with WNS-affected bats.

Is there a cure?

Not yet. Some promising interventions are being researched, such as naturally occurring bacteria that seem to limit the growth of the white-nose fungus. However, these treatments need to be carefully tested before widespread release in the environment, to make sure they'll actually be helpful, and not cause more stress to either bats or the ecosystems in which they live.

If a cell has made extra copies of itself but then they divide in half , the first copy gets DNA but the second doesn't. What el

Mitosis is the process of cell division that creates a new cell identical to the original. Somatic cells, such as muscles, hair and skin, undergo mitosis regularly in humans and other organisms. This is an important type of cell division needed to facilitate the repair of damaged cells, growth and replacement of old cells with new ones.
When a new cell is created, it must have the same library of genetic information all other cells in the body have access to. Because all the material in the new cell must come from the first cell, the original cell must make a copy of its DNA before completing the process of mitosis. These two sets of DNA only exist for as long as it takes the cell to undergo mitosis, which can be anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes in certain human cells. When the cell division is complete, both of the cells have a single identical copy of DNA.

1) Describe the process of osmosis
klemol [59]
1. Osmosis is a process which occurs when there is a difference in solute concentration between two solutions separated by a semipermeable membrane.

2. Osmotic pressure is the minimum pressure which needs to be applied to a solution to prevent the inward flow of its pure solvent across a semipermeable membrane. It is also defined as the measure of the tendency of a solution to take in pure solvent by osmosis.

3. The semipermeable membrane limits the diffusion of solutes in the water.

4. In an isotonic solution, the flow of water in and out of the cell is happening at the same rate. ... Water moves into and out of cells by osmosis.

5. Osmosis is basically diffusion with water. ... The most common example of facilitated diffusion is the movement of water across a cell membrane through transmembrane proteins, which requires no energy. They are simply powered by the concentration differences of the molecules between the two sides of the cell membrane.

Is there a human carrying capacity on Earth? Explain why or why not.
ira [324]

Answer: Every species has a carrying capacity, even humans. However, it is very difficult for ecologists to calculate human carrying capacity. Humans are a complex species. We do not reproduce, consume resources, and interact with our living environment uniformly.
