A lab group was working and did not turn off their hot plate. They left their beaker on it with water boiling and a thermometer

in the beaker. The water evaporated and the thermometer exploded.
a) Explain why it is important to always turn off the hot plate and to be sure it is cool before putting it away.
b) There are two beakers. One was just taken off the hot plate, while the other was sitting on the lab table. Can you tell which one is hot just by looking? Explain.
