Paleontology is the study of fossils which tries to explain the evolution of organisms, their environment and interactions with each other. The various sub divisions of paleontology are vertebrate paleontology, invertebrate paleontology , micropaleontology, paleobotany, palynology etc.

The study of vertebrate fossils, from primitive fishes to the immediate ancestors of modern mammals is known as vertebrate paleontology. Invertebrate paleontology deals with the study of invertebrate animal fossils, such as molluscs, echinoderms, arthropods and annelid worms. Paleobotany studies fossil plants which includes the study of fossil algae and fungi in addition to land plants.  Micropaleontology is the study of microscopic fossil organisms, regardless of the group to which they belong.
