Dihybrid crosses can be used to predict two independent alleles in the future generation. In echidnas, the allele for brown fur

(B) is
dominant over the allele for black fur (b). Also, the allele for sharp claws (C) is dominant over the allele for dull claws (C). What
percentage of the offspring from a BbCc x BBCC cross would be expected to be homozygous dominant for both traits?

Answer:

25% of the offsprings will be BBCC

Explanation:

This is a typical dihybrid cross involving two distinct genes. One coding for fur colour and the other for claw sharpness. The allele for brown fur (B) is dominant over the allele for black fur (b) in the first gene while the allele for sharp claws (C) is dominant over the allele for dull claws (c) in the second gene.

In a cross between parents with genotypes: BbCc x BBCC , each parent will produce four possible allelic combinations of gametes as follows:

BbCc: BC, Bc, bC, bc

BBCC: BC, BC, BC, BC

Using these gametes in a punnet square (see attached image), 16 possible offsprings will be produced with four distinct genotypes:

BBCC (4)

BBCc (4)

BbCC (4)

BbCc (4)

According to the question, an offspring that is homozygous dominant for both traits will possess a genotype: BBCC

N.B: Homozygous dominant means contains same alleles for the dominant trait.

Hence, offsprings with genotype, BBCC, from this cross are expected to be 4 out of the 16 possible offsprings. Hence, the percentage is 4/16 × 100 = 25%.

Why are dominant alleles not necessarily more common than recessive alleles?
marta [7]
It all depends on the trait. If the dominant is more common that the recessive trait then it is more likely to a dominant trait in the gene pool. But if the recessive trait is more common in the gene pool then you will have a recessive trait. Does this make sense? Let me know if I'm right!

Which two processes does this diagram most directly models?
svet-max [94.6K]

The correct answer is D. Homeostasis and transport of molecules

Explanation:

The diagram presented shows the movement of glucose from outside the cell to inside it. Also, this diagram illustrates this process occurs through the cell membrane and there is a higher concentration outside the cell.

This complex process illustrates the transport of molecules in the cell, which refers to a mechanism that allows molecules and substances to move in and out of a cell. Moreover, this process implies molecules (in this case glucose) move to one area with a lower concentration to preserve equilibrium as shown by the diagram. Additionally, this equilibrium is part of homeostasis which is a set of mechanisms to main an equilibrium in the cell, including appropriate levels of glucose and other substances.
