Atlas is the word that has its origins in Greek mythology.
It referred to the Titan god named Atlas, whose job was to hold up the sky for eternity after the Olympians defeated the Titans.

The initial understanding I got from the painting was that people are unaware of other's suffering because they are too involved in everyday life, but Auden's poem digs deep into the subject that people are unaware of other peoples suffering when it is indeed going on."
