Why were railroads built instead of canals in some places?

There are disadvantages in canals than railroads. One is it cannot be used to ship goods. Compared to railroads in where it has geological constraint. Railroads do operate faster than canal boats thus it is preferable for passengers not just for cargo.

The answer is The Regan Doctrain. This doctain renewed the opposition of communism by supporting U.S. friendly countries.  He also believed the U.S. should have the strongest military in the world.
