The United States and Britain ran an airlift of food and supplies to West Berlin for about a year since late 1948 after Soviet authorities decreed a terrestrial blockade around the zones of the Western Allies that made West Berlin. The blockade of Berlin was one of the first clashes of the Cold War and ended in failure.
