Many of his images used fluid compositions that combined order and disorder, often on barren streets, generating feelings of tension, peculiarity, and discomfort. The images, both chaotic and organized at the same time, seemed to reflect an inner turmoil about what he saw. Friedlander liked taking pictures of storefronts, street signs, walls, and empty streets.
