There were 234 Republicans and 207 Democrats in the House of Representatives. The Senate had 45 Republicans, 53 Democrats and 2 Independents who caucused with the Democrats. In the House, the average length of service was 9.1 years. In the Senate, it was 10.2 years. There were 103 women serving in Congress at this time: 83 in the House and 20 in the Senate.</span>
