The economy of South Carolina was based on plantations for cash crops such as tobacco and rice. These crops require lots of workers, they are what is know as labor-intensive. At first, rich and free whites used indentured servants (who were also white) to work in the plantations, but with time, the switched to african slaves because they were cheaper, and would be slaves for life, while indentured servants gained their freedom after a few years of labor.
