Answer:

  x = 7

Step-by-step explanation:

First, you look at the equation. Identify the locations of variable terms (both sides of the equal sign) and the constant terms (both sides of the equal sign).

If there are any parentheses, it is a good idea to use the distributive property to eliminate them. Here, there are none.

I like to start by subtracting <em>the variable term with the smallest coefficient</em>. Here, that is 3x, so we add -3x to both sides of the equation.

  3x -3x +1 = 5x -3x -13

  1 = 2x -13 . . . . . . . . . . . . combine like terms

Now, we have the only variable term on one side of the equal sign. We want it by itself, so we need to make the -13 go away. We do that by adding its opposite to both sides of the equation:

  1 +13 = 2x -13 +13

  14 = 2x . . . . . . . . . . . . combine like terms

Finally, we want the coefficient of 2 in the x-term to disappear. We make that happen by multiplying both sides of the equation by 1/2, the reciprocal of that coefficient.

  (1/2)(14) = (1/2)(2x)

  7 = x . . . . the solution

__

It is generally a good idea to <em>check your work</em> by seeing if your solution value satisfies the equation:

  3(7) +1 = 5(7) -13 . . . . put 7 where x is in the original equation

  21 +1 = 35 -13

  22 = 22 . . . . . . x = 7 is the solution

_____

<em>Additional comment</em>

By subtracting 3x from 5x, the result is 2x with a positive coefficient. We could solve the equation just as easily by subtracting 5x from 3x. That result would be ...

  -2x +1 = -13

Subtracting 1 would give

  -2x = -14

and you would multiply by -1/2 to get x=7. I personally like to avoid having this many minus signs show up in the problem. That is why I choose to subtract the x-term with the smallest coefficient.

Find the equation of a parabola with a vertical axis and its vertex at the origin and passing through the point (-2, 3)
vredina [299]

a vertical axis, I assume it means a vertical axis of symmetry, thus it'd be a vertical parabola, like the one in the picture below.

\bf ~~~~~~\textit{parabola vertex form} \\\\ \begin{array}{llll} y=a(x- h)^2+ k\qquad \qquad \leftarrow vertical\\\\ x=a(y- k)^2+ h \end{array} \qquad\qquad vertex~~(\stackrel{}{ h},\stackrel{}{ k}) \\\\[-0.35em] \rule{34em}{0.25pt}\\\\ \begin{cases} h=0\\ k=0 \end{cases}\implies y=a(x-0)^2+0 \\\\\\ \textit{we also know that } \begin{cases} x=-2\\ y=3 \end{cases}\implies 3=a(-2-0)^2+0\implies 3=4a \\\\\\ \cfrac{3}{4}=a~\hspace{10em}y=\cfrac{3}{4}(x-0)^2+0\implies \boxed{y=\cfrac{3}{4}x^2}

5. A ski slope is 310 yards long with a vertical drop of 220 yards. Find the
OleMash [197]
It helps to draw a picture so you can see which trig ratios to use but...

310 is the hypotenuse of the ski slope and the side length across from the angle you’re looking for is 220, the vertical drop.

You can use sin to find theta.

sinx= 220/310

sinx=0.70967...
x = sin inverse of 0.70967....
x = 45°

Answer:

Part 9) x=5

Part 10) x=-9

Step-by-step explanation:

we know that

The <u><em>Midpoint Theorem</em></u> states that: The segment joining two sides of a triangle at the midpoints of those sides is parallel to the third side and is half the length of the third side

Part 9) we know that

Point Q is the midpoint segment XY (QY=QX)

Point R is the midpoint segment XW (RW=RX)

Applying the Midpoint Theorem

RQ is parallel to WY

and

RQ=\frac{1}{2}WY

we have

RQ=2x-3\\WY=x+9

substitute

2x-3=\frac{1}{2}(x+9)

solve for x

4x-6=(x+9)

4x-x=9+6

3x=15

x=5

Part 10) we know that

Point B is the midpoint segment TS (BS=BT)

Point C is the midpoint segment RS (CS=CR)

Applying the Midpoint Theorem

BC is parallel to TR

and

BC=\frac{1}{2}TR

we have

BC=x+19\\TR=x+29

substitute

x+19=\frac{1}{2}(x+29)

solve for x

2x+38=(x+29)

2x-x=29-38

x=-9
