As an example of an ancient culture laying a foundation for a modern idea, you can take an Ancient Greece and their idea of democracy.  Athenians founded ekklesia, where an adult male could participate. They held meetings where they used the voting system to make decisions.

Using the concept of hybridity, I explore seventeenth-century Spanish ranches in northern New Mexico for the interactions between Spanish colonists and Pueblo wives, servants, slaves, and laborers. The architecture, foodways, and artifacts show an interplay between Pueblo and Spanish ways of making do suggesting that Pueblo peoples contributed in substantial ways to the nature of these households.
