When people look at a picture, the things that they tend to notice first are those called "positive shapes." Positive shapes refers to the shape of an actual object (which occupies a "positive space"). This is in contrast to "negative shapes," which refers to the space of the background, or the space that is located between positive shapes (and which occupy a "negative space").
