A weather balloon is designed to expand to a maximum radius of 24 m at its working altitude, where the air pressure is 0.030 atm

and the temperature is 200 K. If the balloon is filled at atmospheric pressure and 349 K, what is its radius at liftoff

Answer:

<em>Radius at liftoff 8.98 m</em>

Explanation:

At the working altitude;

maximum radius = 24 m

air pressure = 0.030 atm

air temperature = 200 K

At liftoff;

temperature = 349 K

pressure = 1 atm

radius = ?

<em>First, we assume balloon is spherical in nature,</em>

<em>and that the working gas obeys the gas laws.</em>

from the radius, we can find the volume of the balloon at working atmosphere.

Volume of a sphere = \frac{4}{3} \pi r^{3}

volume of balloon = \frac{4}{3} x 3.142 x 24^{3} = 57913.34 m^3

using the gas equation,

\frac{P1V1}{T1} = \frac{P2V2}{T2}

<em>The subscript 1 indicates the properties of the gas at working altitude, and the subscript 2 indicates properties of the gas at liftoff.</em>

imputing values, we have

\frac{0.03*57913.34}{200} = \frac{1*V2}{349}

0.03 x 57913.34 x 349 = 200V2

V2 = 606352.67/200 = <em>3031.76 m^3  this is the volume occupied by the gas in the balloon at liftoff.</em>

from the formula volume of a sphere,

V =  \frac{4}{3} \pi r^{3} =  \frac{4}{3} x 3.142 x r^{3} = 3031.76

4.19r^{3}  = 3031.76

r^{3} = 3031.76/4.19

radius r of the balloon on liftoff = \sqrt[3]{723.57} = <em>8.98 m</em>

Give a critical discussion on why hardness test needs to perform in engineering practice.
Alex Ar [27]

Answer:

Explanation:

a) Hardness is a measure of the resistance of a material to permanent deformation (plastic) on its surface,

Hardness tests play an important role in material testing, quality control and component acceptance.

Hardness test are needed to be perform as a <em>quality assurance procedure</em>, to validate materials are according to the specific hardness required,

We depend on the data to verify the quality of the components to determine if a material has the necessary properties for its intended use.

Through the years, the establishment of increasingly productive and effective means of testing, has given way to new cutting-edge methods that perform and interpret hardness tests more effectively than ever. The result is a greater capacity and dependence on "letting the instrument do the work", contributing to substantial increases in performance and consistency and continuing to make hardness tests very useful in industrial and R&D applications.

b)

  1. <u>Instrumental errors</u>:   Instrument calibration is extremely important. An instrument with expired calibration may be generating erroneous data systematically.
  2. <u>Enviromental error: </u>An example is when surface preparation of the sample to be tested is poor, then the error can be presented when measuring the indentation on the sample to determine the hardness value.

A sports car traveling along a straight line increases its speed from 19.8 mi/h to 59.9 mi/h.a. What is the ratio of the final t
Natasha2012 [34]

Answer

given,

initial speed of the car (v₁)= 19.8 mi/h

final speed of the car (v₂)= 59.9 mi/h

a) initial momentum = m v₁

                   P₁ = 19.8 m

  final final momentum = m v₂

                   P₂ = 59.9 m

      ratio = \dfrac{P_2}{P_1}

              =\dfrac{59.9 m}{19.8 m}

      ratio of momentum=\dfrac{P_2}{P_1}=3.025

b) initial kinetic energy= 1/2 m v₁²

                   K₁ = 196.02 m

  final kinetic energy= 1/2 m v₂²

                   K₂ = 1794.005 m

      ratio = \dfrac{K_2}{K_1}

              =\dfrac{1794.005 m}{196.02 m}

      ratio of Kinetic energy=\dfrac{P_2}{P_1}=9.15

Explain why it is important to identify a reference point for any description of motion.
Leya [2.2K]

A reference is critical because it determines how much motion has occurred. You can't determine how much an objected has moved if you don't know where it came from.
