A buffer solution based upon sulfurous acid (H2SO3) was created by treating 1.00 L of a 1.00 M sulfurous acid solution with NaOH

until a pH of 1.135 was achieved (assuming no volume change). To this buffer 1.180 moles of NaOH were added (assume no volume change). What is the final pH of this solution

Answer:

The final pH of this solution is 7.69

Explanation:

having the chemical reaction:

H2SO3 = HSO3- + H

Ka = 1.5x10^-5

pKa = 1.82

H2SO3 + OH- = H2O + HSO3-

1                  ?                      0

1-x               0                      +x

the pH is equal to:

pH = pKa + log([HSO3-]/[H2SO3])

1.135 = 1.82 + log(x/(1-x))

Clearing x:

x = 0.17

Having the reaction:

H2SO3 + OH- = H2O + HSO3-

0.83         1.180                 0.17

0                 0.83                1

HSO3- = SO3-2   +   H+

Ka2 = 1x10^-7

pKa2 = 7

HSO3-  + OH- = SO3-2 + H2O

1              0.83       0

0.17            0          0.83

pH = pKa2 + log([SO32-]/[HSO3-]) = 7 + log(0.83/0.17) = 7.69

How could a synthetic material such as Acegram affect society?
pantera1 [17]

Explanation:

Synthetic fiber or synthetic fibre (in British English; see spelling differences) are fibers made by humans through chemical synthesis, as opposed to natural fibers that are directly derived from living organisms. They are the result of extensive research by scientists to improve upon naturally occurring animal and plant fibers. In general, synthetic fibers are created by extruding fiber-forming materials through spinnerets, forming a fiber. These are called synthetic or artificial fibers. Synthetic fibers are created by a process known as polymerization, which involves combining monomers to make a long chain or polymer. The word polymer comes from a Greek prefix "poly" which means "many" and suffix "mer" which means "single units". (Note: each single unit of a polymer is called a monomer). There are two types of polymerization: linear polymerization and cross-linked polymerization.

Classify the substances according to the strongest solute-solvent interaction that will occur between the given substances and w
MArishka [77]

Answer:

A.  Dipole-dipole forces; B. dipole-dipole forces;

C. ion-dipole forces; D. ion-dipole forces

Explanation:

A. HF

HF is a weak acid but a highly polar molecule. The strongest intermolecular force with water is an especially strong dipole-dipole force (hydrogen bonding) of the type

H-F· · ·H-OH and H₂O· · ·H-F

B. CH₃OH

CH₃OH has a highly polar O-H bond. The strongest intermolecular force with water is the especially strong dipole-dipole force (hydrogen bonding):

CH₃(H)O· · ·H-OH and CH₃O-H· · ·OH₂

C. CaCl₂

CaCl₂(s) ⟶Ca²⁺(aq) + 2Cl⁻(aq)

CaCl₂ separates into hydrated ions in solution. The strongest intermolecular force with water is ion-dipole attraction.

Ca²⁺· · ·OH₂ and Cl⁻· · ·H-OH

D. FeBr₃

FeBr₃(s) ⟶Fe³⁺(aq) + 3Br⁻(aq)

FeBr₃ separates into hydrated ions in solution. The strongest intermolecular force with water is ion-dipole attraction.

Fe³⁺· · ·OH₂ and Br⁻· · ·H-OH

Balance the equation
__Cu+__Ag(NO3)——__Cu(NO3)2+__Ag
Alex_Xolod [135]

Answer :

Balanced chemical equation for above reaction :

\mathrm{Cu +2 \:  AgNO_3 \longrightarrow Cu(NO_3)_2 + 2 \: Ag}

This is a displacement reaction, where copper (Cu) being morereactive than Silver (Ag) displaces Silver from its compound " Silver Nitrate " to form " Copper Nitrate " and silver .
