In the US civil cases can be tried in a bench trial (this is the correct answer) ( it means by a judge) or by a jury. In fact in the US most cases are tried in a bench trial, and this is also the default (standard) option, and jury is only introduced if any party asks for it.

Pasado y presente (Alianza, 1996) y La historia de la familia en la península Ibérica (UCLM, 2008) compilado por Francisco García González (que también firma aquí uno de los mejores capítulos).
