Answer:  

If the iron rod is placed in the nitrogen then nothing happens. But when the rod of iron is placed in air.

It is also known as iron oxide which takes place when the iron is exposed to moisture and oxygen for a longer period of time.

Oxygen gets attached to iron at an atomic level, forming a compound which is known as an oxide which weakens the metal bond.

Here, this process weakens the iron and corrodes it and makes it unuseful.
