They produce oxygen naturally in the initial stages of photosynthesis. Plants need oxygen but only later, after photosynthesis, when they utilize carbohydrates for energy. In short, photosynthesis is about building molecules of potential energy and oxygen is released as a by product. When plants need to utilize these energy molecules, they will also require some oxygen to fuel the process.
