The lack of a comma means that the happy part of his life was short. This is true, at the end, he is briefly happy. It is also ironic as the story is sad at the beginning, despite the reader reading the title thinking it will be happy. The title makes sense when he becomes happy at the end... Only to get shot and die. I hope this helped!
