The European nations in general tried to prevent war by giving way into Germany's demands and trying to take side by germany by attempting to appease it.  However, these efforts became futile, as Hitler continued to demand more lands and territories

European nations pursued the politics of appeasement which was about giving Hitler what he wanted in exchange for peace. However, they didn't realize that peace was never an option and that Hitler only wanted to expand even more and that their appeasement had failed. That's why many politicians such as Churchill criticized the appeasement and was against it.
