btw I'd rearrange this as

y= -5x+23

If you want to find changes in y, let's compare differences when we change the x.

For example, if x=1

y= -5(1)+23

-5+23=18

So, when x=1, y=18

Now, let's have x=2

y= -5(2)+23

-10+23=13

So, when x=2, y=13

Let's compare the difference in y by subtraction.
