America's fear of communism from 1947-1953 was due to the increased political power of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union had a communist system in which Stalin abused his power and took away civil liberties from his citizens. After World War II, his power continued to increase as the Soviet Union was allied/had control over several different countries in Europe including Romania, Bulgaria, Albania, and Czechoslovakia. America was worried that this communist influence would continue to spread all over the world.

The fear of communism was not only present overseas, but also in America. During World War II there were Soviet spies in the US that gave information to the Soviet government. This, along with a small communist party in America, allowed for the development of McCarthyism. McCarthyism was essentially a witch hunt for any suspected communists. Anyone perceived as a communist threat could be called in front of Congress in the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC).

Which events in the post World War One period Helped Adolf Hitler rise to power
Tresset [83]
One enormously key event was the Great Depression.  The Depression was a global phenomenon, and Germany suffered extreme rates of joblessness and inflation during those years.  Germany's economic situation had been made even more difficult by the reparation payments imposed on it as part of the Peace of Versailles that concluded World War I.  The very bad state of affairs in Germany allowed a radical group like the Nazis and a charismatic strongman like Hitler to come to power by making grand promises to the German people.

Coupled with the economic problems plaguing Germany, there was also a strong desire by the German people to feel pride in their nation again. The Peace of Versailles had forced Germany to accept the guilt or responsibility for causing World War I.  Germany was forced to disarm itself and have only a very small volunteer army.  Hitler's appeal to national strength and the rebuilding of Germany's military might made him a popular figure also.

Hitler also mastered the art of campaigning and propaganda.  He traveled all over Germany making staged appearances that whipped audiences into a frenzy of enthusiasm for the nation and the National Socialist German Workers' Party (the Nazis).

Knowingly making a false statement in print about someone else is known as
larisa [96]

Libel

Publishing false statements knowingly is referred to as libel. This differs from slander which is defamation of character expressed verbally.

Though the US constitution contains an amendment protecting freedom of the press, this amendment does not protect people from false information. The Supreme Court has not allowed people to report false information in particular about individuals that ruin their reputation or defame their character to be protected by the First Amendment.
