This is one of such a process in which the cells that are no longer needed in a multicellular organism or are instead a threat to the organism itself are destroyed by a programmed cell death. When an embryonic, paddle-shaped hand forms indentations to shape the individual finger it has completed the process of Apoptosis as it destroys the cells in order for new ones to make the shape.
