An inciting incident is defined as an event that begins a story's problem. All the details before the inciting incident are not as important as the story that happens after said incident.

An example of inciting incident in American Born Chinese is A. DANNY IS VISITED BY CHIN-KEE.

When Chin-kee visited Danny, volatile emotions were manifested until such time that a confrontation between the cousins seem inevitable. And when it did happen, everything was revealed.
