There are different movements within communism, ranging from libertarian (anarcho-communists, autonomists, council communists) to authoritarianism (Marxism, Leninism, Trotskyism, Stalinism and Maoism).  

During the 20th century, the authoritarian Marxist and Leninist views were the main determinants of communism, through the establishment of communist dictatorships in nations such as the Soviet Union, Cuba, China and North Korea, and political parties that also pursued such a model in other countries.
