Many people like the Cherokee had already been pushed off their lands in the Southeast and were now facing further pressure. This ultimately led to confrontations and wars with groups of native peoples. For example, the Plains Wars were a series of conflicts from in the 1850s through the 1870s between Native Americans and the United States over control of the Great Plains. This region was located between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains.
