Answer:

The spy must have at the start the amount of $1,024 in order to escape

Step-by-step explanation:

Let

a ------> amount of money that the spy must have at the start to escape

y ----> the remaining money

x ----> the number of guards

In this problem the remaining money is going to be reduced by half, every time the spy passes through a guard, so we can use an exponential function of the form

y=a(b^{x})

where

a is the initial value (amount of money at the start)

b is the base

b=(1-r)

r is the rate of decay

In this problem we have

r=50% -----> r=0.50

The value of b is

b=(1-0.50)=0.50

substitute

y=a(0.50^{x})

we know that

In order to escape after the fourth guard the amount of money remaining must be equal to $64

so

For x=4, y=$64

substitute in the equation and solve for a

64=a(0.50^{4})

64=a(0.0625)

a=64/(0.0625)

a=\$1,024

therefore

The spy must have at the start the amount of $1,024 in order to escape

Find the area of a plane figure bounded by lines
natulia [17]

Answer: 4.5

<u>Step-by-step explanation:</u>

First, find the points of intersection by solving the system.

y = x² + 2x + 4

y = x + 6

Solve by substitution:

x² + 2x + 4 = x + 6   ⇒   x² + x - 2 = 0   ⇒   (x + 2)(x - 1) = 0   ⇒   x = -2, x = 1

Now, integrate from x = -2 to x = 1

\int\limits^1_2 {(x+6)-(x^{2}+2x+4) } \,    <em>the bottom of the integral is -2 </em>

= \int\limits^1_2 {x+6-x^{2}-2x-4 } \,

= \int\limits^1_2 {-x^{2}-x+2 } \,

= \frac{-x^{3}}{3} - \frac{x^{2}}{2}+2x\int\limits^1_2 {} \,

= (\frac{-1^{3}}{3} - \frac{1^{2}}{2}+2(1)) - (\frac{-(-2)^{3}}{3} - \frac{(-2)^{2}}{2}+2(-2))

= (\frac{-1}{3} - \frac{1}{2} +2) - (\frac{8}{3} -\frac{4}{2} -4)

= \frac{-9}{3} + \frac{3}{2} +6

= -3 + 1.5 + 6

= 4.5

Tom was driving 20.3 meters per second in a 45 mile per hour zone. Was Tom speeding? Explain using a unit conversion as well as
My name is Ann [436]

Answer:

Tom was speeding.

Step-by-step explanation:

The driving speed of Tom = 20.3 meters per second.

Speed allowed in the zone = 45 miles per hour zone.

Since the unit of speed allowed is given in miles per hour but the speed of tom is given in meters per second. So, first, we have to convert the meter per second into mile per hour then we can compare and find that Tom is speeding or not.

1 mile = 1609.34 meters

1 hour = 3600 second

Now convert 20.3 into mile per hour.

20.3 meters per second. = (20.3 / 1609.34)*3600 = 45.40981 mile per hour.

Since Tom’s speed is more than the allowed speed so he is speeding.
