A factor in determining the usefulness of an examination as a measure of demonstrated ability is the amount of spread that occur

s in the grades. If the spread or variation of examination scores is very small, it usually means that the examination was either too hard or too easy. However, if the variance of scores is moderately large, then there is a definite difference in scores between "better," "average," and "poorer" students. A group of attorneys in a Midwest state has been given the task of making up this year's bar examination for the state. The examination has 500 total possible points, and from the history of past examinations, it is known that a standard deviation of around 60 points is desirable. Of course, too large or too small a standard deviation is not good. The attorneys want to test their examination to see how good it is. A preliminary version of the examination (with slight modifications to protect the integrity of the real examination) is given to a random sample of 21 newly graduated law students. Their scores give a sample standard deviation of 68 points. Using a 0.01 level of significance, test the claim that the population standard deviation for the new examination is 60 against the claim that the population standard deviation is different from 60.
(a) What is the level of significance?
(b) Find the value of the chi-square statistic for the sample. (Use 2 decimal places.) What are the degrees of freedom?

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

From the information given :

The null hypothesis H_o : \sigma = 60

The alternative hypothesis  Ha : \sigma \neq 60

Given that:

the sample size n = 21

sample standard deviation s = 68

population standard deviation σ = 60

a) The level of significance \alpha =0.01

b) The chi-square statistics can be calculated as:

\bar X = \dfrac{(n-1)s^2}{\sigma^2}

\bar X = \dfrac{(21-1)68^2}{60^2}

\bar X = \dfrac{(20)4624}{3600}

\bar X = 25.69

The degree of freedom is :

= n - 1

= 21 - 1

= 20

Which quadratic function has a vertex point of (3,5) and passes through the<br> point (-2,55)?
Alex17521 [72]

9514 1404 393

Answer:

  f(x) = 2(x -3)² +5

Step-by-step explanation:

For vertex (h, k) and scale factor 'a', the vertex form is ...

  f(x) = a(x -h)² +k

We can fill in the values of h and k from your vertex, and use the values of the extra point to find 'a'.

  55 = a(-2 -3)² +5

  50 = 25a . . . . . . . . subtract 5

  a = 2 . . . . . . . . . . . divide by 25

So, the function is ...

  f(x) = 2(x -3)² +5

__

In standard form, that will be ...

  f(x) = 2x² -12x +23

What is the average rate of change of f(x) = −2x + 1 from x = −5 to x = 1?
Fiesta28 [93]
Average rate of change is just the slope between the 2 points
we can do this the long way or the smart way

long way, find the 2 points and find the slope between them
when x=-5, f(-5)=-2(-5)+1=10+1=11
when x=1, f(1)=-2(1)+1=-2+1=-1
so the points are (-5,11) and (1,-1)
the slope between them is (-1-11)/(1-(-5))=(-12)/(1+5)=-12/6=-2
the answer is B, -2

smart way
recognize that that is a linear equation and the slope between any 2 points will be the m in y=mx+b
f(x)=-2x+1
the slope is -2
the average rate of change is -2
answer is B. -2
