When Sam and Eric claims that that they saw a beast, the situation among the boys become intense. Ralph remains calm as he doesn't want to believe in the beast until he sees it for himself but the younger boys become terrified on hearing about the beast.

They decide to make a search expedition for the beast in the island and Jack volunteers to lead the search expedition. In this way, the positions of authority and  leadership in Ralph and Jack begin to change as the attention starts to shift more towards Jack's leadership and bravery.

The older boys seem to be listening to Jack though they weren't quite sure if the beast existed for real or not. They were hesitant to believe the beast existed because there were no tracks or evidence of the beast.
