During the rise of industrial America in the late 1800s, many people from different parts of the world decided to leave their homes and immigrate to the United States because the country was seen as the land of economic opportunity. Many immigrants left their homes because of scarcity of land and jobs, crop failure, bad living conditions such as contaminated water, and rising taxes and famine. On the other hand, others came looking for personal freedom or relief from political and religious persecution. Hoping for a better future, nearly 12 million immigrants arrived in the United States between 1870 and 1900.
