Answer:

He encouraged foreign traders to trade along the East Coast of Africa.  He wrote introductory letters to the traders to the interior.  He signed trade agreements with Europeans and U.S.A. to encourage foreign trade.  He provided security for slave traders hence intensified trade with the outside world.  He invited Indiana Banyans to settle along the East African Coast and trade.  He established plantation agriculture which produced commodities for international trade. He created political stability along the East African Coast which created conducive environment  for trade.

He believed that by paying Mexico's debt to America would let him have the settlements that he wanted to get the Rio Grande, pay the debt settlement of Mexico in exchange for his conditions, and by California and Mexico as well. Polk thought that since there is a tension between America and Mexico it was best to get in and open some agreements.

Back then, slavery existed and there was much more violence against others. It's very hard to know exactly what the common motives for things like these were. For example, women weren't allowed to wear anything that wasn't a dress and they weren't allowed to cut their hair short since this went against "the norm" but that didn't stop them. During the Roaring 20's women decided to change things up with "the norm" of society. It became a lot more common to see women with shorts on and pixie cuts.
