<span>The answer is Joan of Arc.  She was a peasant girl who inspired the French to fight the English.  She led the French in defeating the English at Orleans. She continued to win battles against the English and this made the English believe that she had magical powers.  She was captured on May 23, 1430 while defending <span>Compiègne from the English and Burgundians.  She was later put on trial as a witch and burned at the stake on May 30, 1431.  Later Pope Benedict XV canonized her as a saint in May 16, 1920.</span></span>
