1. y=1/2x-3
Before solving, memorize this formula:
y=mx+b
m=slope
b= y intercept
Therefore, the slope would be 1/2. The y intercept would be -3.
2. 3x+y=2 We have to find out what y is. to do this we havhave to get y by itself:
3x-3x+y=2-3x Subtract 3x from 3x and 2.
y=2-3x or y=-3x+2
The slope is -3. The y intercept is 2.
3. 2x-y=3 Again, same as 2.:
2x-2x-y=3-2x Subtract 2x.
-y=3-2x y cant be negative. For y to be positive, you have to divide by -y(-1):
-y/-y=3-2x/-y
y= -3y+2x
Slope is -3. y intercept is 2.
For the graphs:
1. y=1/2x-3
y intercept is what y equals in (x,y) when x=0. for example: y=1/2x-3
y=1/2(0)-3
y=-3
this is why you wouldplot your first point on(0,3). Remember, x goes left to right horizontally while y goes up and down vertically. Now, you'll use the slope: 1/2
1/2=y/x From the point you'll go up one unit, since y=1. Then, go right 2 units since x=2. This is your second point: (2,-2)
One more tip: When a slope is negative (i.e. -1/4), Only y is negative. So when y is negative you go down by units instead of going up.
