Since suburbs are residential areas almost everything in them are houses that are privately owned, meaning that people need to travel longer distances to go to work or go out for pleasure. Therefore they rely on cars for transportation a lot more than inner city people. Even if inner city people rely on public transportation, they still have to walk to bus stops or train stations. Since cities are more densely populated, it's also less efficient to drive, making walking a better alternative.
