Savannah is a city in the state of Georgia with an area of 202.3 km2 and a population of approximately 145,000 inhabitants. The city, which was founded in 1733 and was the first settlement in Georgia, is located in the eastern part of the state at the mouth of the Savannah River about 380 km southeast of the capital Atlanta. It is a significant port city and has been so since its inception when the bulk of "New World" products were shipped across Savannah. The city's historic center is designed as a grid plan with a large number of boulevards and leafy squares, and is known as one of the most beautiful and well-preserved urban environments in the United States.
