The crowded, rat-infested apartment Bigger shares with his brother, sister, and mother is, in a sense, a prison cell. Instead of feeling included, Bigger feels ashamed by the way she treats him. Bigger understands the reality of the separation between white and black people. He sees the danger whites can be for blacks. Because of this danger, Bigger fears Mary's familiarity.
