Roanoke (Virginia) was the first official colony by the British in America, dating sometime in 1585. However, the inhabitants of the colony mysteriously disappeared in 1590, so there was a little break in terms of settling. Later, Jamestown was settled by the British in 1607, also located in Virginia, for the purpose of finding gold, and later, tobacco.

Technically, Roanoke was the first British colony. However, Jamestown was the first surviving colony.

Hope this helps. :)
