On a single set of axes, sketch a picture of the graphs of the following four equations: y = −x+ √ 2, y = −x− √ 2, y = x+ √ 2, a
Artist 52 [7]

Answer:

( 1/√ 2 , 1/√ 2 ) , ( 1/√ 2 , - 1/√ 2 ),  ( -1/√ 2 , 1/√ 2 ) , ( -1/√ 2 , - 1/√ 2 )

y + 1 = - ( x + 2 ) + √ 2 , y + 1 = - ( x + 2 ) - √ 2 ,  y + 1 = ( x + 2 ) - √ 2

             y + 1 = ( x + 2 ) + √ 2  ,   ( x + 2 )^2 + ( y + 1)^2 = 1

Step-by-step explanation:

Given:

- Four functions to construct a diamond:

                y = −x+ √ 2,  y = −x− √ 2,  y = x+ √ 2, and y = x − √ 2.

Find:

a)Show that the unit circle sits inside this diamond tangentially; i.e. show that the unit circle intersects each of the four lines exactly once.

b)Find the intersection points between the unit circle and each of the four lines.

(c) Construct a diamond shaped region in which the circle of radius 1 centered at (−2, − 1) sits tangentially. Use the techniques of this section to help.

Solution:

- For first part see the attachment.

- The equation of the unit circle is given as follows:

                                      x^2 + y^2 = 1

- To determine points of intersection we have to solve each given function of y with unit circle equation for set of points of intersection:

                                For:  y = −x+ √ 2 , x - √ 2

                                And: x^2 + y^2 = 1

                                x^2 + (+/- * (x - √ 2))^2 = 1

                                x^2 + (x - √ 2)^2 = 1

                                2x^2 -2√ 2*x + 2 = 1

                                2x^2 -2√ 2*x + 1 = 0

                                 2[ x^2 - √ 2] + 1 = 0

Complete sqr:         (1 - 1/√ 2)^2 = 0

                                 x = 1/√ 2 , x = 1/√ 2

                                 y = -1/√ 2 + √ 2 = 1/√ 2

                                 y = 1/√ 2 - √ 2 = - 1/√ 2

Points are:                ( 1/√ 2 , 1/√ 2 ) , ( 1/√ 2 , - 1/√ 2 )

- Using vertical symmetry of unit circle we can also evaluate other intersection points by intuition:

                                x = - 1/√ 2

                                 y = 1/√ 2 , -1/√ 2

Points are:              ( -1/√ 2 , 1/√ 2 ) , ( -1/√ 2 , - 1/√ 2 )

- To determine the function for the rhombus region that would be tangential to unit circle with center at ( - 2 , - 1 ):

- To shift our unit circle from origin to ( - 2 , - 1 ) i.e two units left and 1 unit down.

- For shifts we use the following substitutions:

                           x = x + 2  ....... 2 units of left shift

                           y = y + 1 .......... 1 unit of down shift

- Now substitute the above shifting expression in all for functions we have:

                          y = −x+ √ 2 ----->  y + 1 = - ( x + 2 ) + √ 2

                          y = −x− √ 2 ----->  y + 1 = - ( x + 2 ) - √ 2

                          y = x- √ 2 ------->  y + 1 = ( x + 2 ) - √ 2

                          y = x+ √ 2 ------> y + 1 = ( x + 2 ) + √ 2

                          x^2 + y^2 = 1 ----->  ( x + 2 )^2 + ( y + 1)^2 = 1

- The following diamond shape graph would have the 4 functions as:

             y + 1 = - ( x + 2 ) + √ 2 , y + 1 = - ( x + 2 ) - √ 2 ,  y + 1 = ( x + 2 ) - √ 2

             y + 1 = ( x + 2 ) + √ 2  ,   ( x + 2 )^2 + ( y + 1)^2 = 1

- See attachment for the new sketch.

PLZZ help me with this good explanation with the zero product property and factoring PLZZ read carefully ❤️❤️
cestrela7 [59]

Answer:

In layman's terms, the zero product property is simply a way of saying "anything times zero equals zero".

The x intercepts happen at (0.5, 0), and (-3, 0).

The vertex is a minimum.

The y-intercept happens at (0, -3).

For the last question, graphing f(x) can be done by taking a few key points (the vertex and x-intercepts are very good, as well as the vertex ± 1, 2, etc.).  By that point you have enough data to sketch the curve.  It helps to know in advance what the general shape of the function will be.  In the case of a quadratic function, it will always be a parabola.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let's start by factoring the function:

f(x) = 2x² + 5x - 3

f(x) = 2x² - x + 6x - 3

f(x) = x(2x − 1) + 3 (2x−1)

f(x) = (x + 3)(2x - 1)

Now that we have it factored, finding its x intercept is quite easy.  We just need to see which values of x would would give a y value of zero.  That may sound backward, but note that when y is equal to zero, the graph is touching, or intercepting, the x-axis.

So if we say:

0 = (x + 3)(2x - 1)

then there are two solutions.  First:

0 = (x + 3)(2x - 1)

0 / (x + 3) = (2x - 1)

0 = 2x - 1

2x = 1

x = 0.5

And the other:

0 = (x + 3)(2x - 1)

0 / (2x - 1) = (x + 3)

0 = x + 3

x = -3

So the x intercepts happen at (0.5, 0), and (-3, 0).

Next, regarding whether the vertex is a maximum or minimum, you can find this by the coefficient of the highest power of x in the function.  If the coefficient is negative, then the vertex is a maximum.  If it's positive, then it's a minimum.  In this case the coefficient is 2, so the vertex is a minimum.

For part C, finding the y intercept is easy enough.  Again, counter-intuitively the y intercept happens when x is equal to zero.  So we just need to replace x with zero in the original equation to find it:

f(x) = 2x² + 5x - 3

f(0) = 2(0)² + 5(0) - 3

f(0) = -3

So the y-intercept happens at (0, -3).

Ina two digit number, the units digit is twice the tens digit. If the number is doubled, it will be 9 more than the number rever
lukranit [14]

9514 1404 393

Answer:

  36

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the digits of the number be represented by t for the tens digit and u for the units digit.

  u = 2t . . . . . . . . the units digit is twice the tens digit

  2(10t +u) = (10u +t) +9 . . . . . double the number is 9 more than its reverse

Substituting for u, we have ...

  2(10t +2t) = 10(2t) +t +9

  24t = 21t +9 . . . . . . . . . . . collect terms

  3t = 9 . . . . . . . . . . . . . subtract 21t

  t = 3 . . . . . . . . . . . divide by 3

  u = 2t = 6 . . . . find u

The number is 36.
