Consider the following element combinations. Classify the bonds formed between each pair as ionic, polar covalent, or nonpolar c

ovalent qualitatively based solely on each element's position on the periodic table. Do not conduct calculations. Drag the appropriate items to their respective bins: Ionic | Polar covalent | Nonpolar covalent
(P and I | Fe and O | S and Cl | S and S | Br and Br | O and Cl | Be and Cl | Al and N)

Bond between Fe and O is an ionic bond, between S and S & Br and Br is a non polar covalent bond and the bond between S and Cl, O and Cl, Be and Cl and between Al and N is a polar covalent bond.

Further explanation:

Bond between P and I:

The bond between phosphorous and iodine is a polar covalent bond.

Bond between Fe and O:

The bond between iron and oxygen is an ionic bond.

Bond between S and Cl:

The bond between sulpher and chlorine is a polar covalent bond.

Bond between S and S:

The bond between two sulpher atoms is a non polar covalent bond.

Bond between Br and Br:

The bond between two bromine atoms is a non polar covalent bond.

Bond between O and Cl:

The bond between an oxygen and chlorine atom is a polar covalent bond.

Bond between Be and Cl:

The bond between a beryllium and chlorine is a polar covalent bond.

Bond between Al and N:

The bond between an aluminum atom and nitrogen atom is a polar covalent bond.

Ionic Bond:

Complete transfer of electrons forms ionic bond. It forms between a metal and a non-metal. Metals can easily donate its electron while the non-metal can accept the electron.

Covalent Bond:

Mutual sharing of electrons forms covalent bond. It is usually formed between non metals.

It is of two type polar covalent and non polar covalent bond.

Polar Covalent Bond:

Polar covalent bond is formed when both the bonding atoms are different and there is unequal distribution of electrons between them.

Non polar covalent bond:

Non polar covalent bond is formed between two same atoms. In this type of bonding there is equal sharing of electrons between bonding atoms.

An ionic bond is formed by the transfer of electrons from one atom to the other. It is usually formed between a metal + non-metal.

A covalent bond is formed by sharing of electrons between two atoms. It is formed between two nonmetals. A polar covalent bond is formed between 2 non-metals which differ in their electronegativities. In contrast, in a non-polar covalent interaction the two atoms could either be the same or have very close electronegativities.

1) P and I : Both non-metals with different electronegativities= Polar Covalent

2) Fe and O: Metal + non-metal = Ionic

3) S and Cl: Both non-metals with different electronegativities= Polar Covalent

4) S and S: Both non-metals and the same atoms = Non-polar Covalent

5) Br and Br: Both non-metals and the same atoms = Non-polar Covalent

6) O and Cl: Both non-metals with different electronegativities= Polar Covalent

7) Be and Cl: Metal + non-metal = Ionic

8) Al and N: Metal + non-metal = Ionic

Water is a compound not a mixture. Justify this statement by giving two reasons.
Allushta [10]

Answer:

Water is a compound and not a mixture. The reasons are the following:

1) It is held tightly through bonds called chemical bonds which is the characteristic of compound and not mixture.

2) It cannot be separated by physical means but can be separated by chemical means.

What is the final volume, in milliliters, when 5.80 mL of 25.0 %(m/v) NaOH solution is diluted to give a 3.50 %(m/v) NaOH soluti
Zigmanuir [339]

Answer:

41.43 mL

Explanation:

First we calculate the mass of NaOH in the original solution:

 • 25.0 % m/v means that in 100 mL of solution, there are 25 grams of NaOH.
 • This means that in 5.80 mL, we would have (5.80 * 25/100) 1.45 grams of NaOH.

Then we calculate the volume of the diluted solution, using the grams of NaOH (that remain the same throughout the dilution process):

 • 1.45 g NaOH * \frac{100 mL}{3.50gNaOH} = 41.43 mL
