Bernard is two years older than his sister Therese and four years younger than his sister

Firstly Bernard = x

A) lets focus on Therese first. Bernard id two years older than her so for Therese’s equation in terms of x it would be x+2. Now for Josephine Bernard is 4 years younger than HER so it would be 4-x.

B) The mother is the PRODUCT of the sisters’ ages so (multiplication)

It would be like this: (x+2)(4-x)= 40 This is all in terms of x.

Solving for the equation (using distributive property) we get:

4x-x+8-2x=40

(Reorganize to group like terms, remember to go in order from the numeral numbers with variables, to variables only then numbers only): 4x-2x-x+8=40 (now combine like terms and simplify): x+8=40 this is his mom’s age in terms of x

C) HERE we can solve for x:

Isolating x to get the answer we move the 8 to the other side of the equation and it becomes a negative 8 so:

x=40-8

x=32

Therefore Bernard is 32 years old.

Hope this helps!

One hundred twenty feet of fencing encloses a rectangular garden on three sides. One side of the garden is the side of a barn an
andre [41]

Answer: The garden has dimensions 30 ft wide X 60 ft long

Step-by-step explanation:

Denote by W the width of the garden and L the length of the garden (longer side) as in the figure attached. The red sides on the figure represent the parts of the garden that require fencing.

L is also the measure of a vertical side of the garden, because a rectangle consists only of vertical and horizontal sides.

We know that the barn is parallel to the longer (vertical) side, so only one of the vertical sides L of the rectangle needs fencing. The other two parts correspond to the horizontal sides of the rectangle so they require 2W feet of fencing. Altogether, the 120 ft of fencing enclose the L+2W ft of the fence, then 120=L+2W. Because the longer side is twice the width, we have that L=2W, so 120=2W+2W=4W. From here, W=30 ft and L=2(30)= 60ft.
