A veterinarian knows that a 50-pound dog gets 0.5 milligram of a certain medicine, and that the number of milligrams, m, varies

directly with the weight of the dog, w. The vet uses these steps to find the amount of medicine to give a 10-pound dog.
Step 1 Find the constant of variation.
k = StartFraction 0.5 Over 50 EndFraction = 0.01
Step 2 Write the direct variation equation.
m = 0.01 w
Step 3
Substitute 10 into the equation to find the dosage for a 10-pound dog.
10 = 0.01 w
Step 4
Solve for w.
10 = 0.01 w. w = 1000.

The 10-pound dog needs 1000 milligrams.

In which step did the veterinarian make the first error?

In the third step, 10 is the mass of the dog. As such, it should have been substituted to w and not to m.

Alana has 2 1/4 bags of chocolate chips that she wants to use in 3 batches of chocolate chip cookies. How much of the chocolate
drek231 [11]

Answer:

1 1/3 bags of chocolate chips

Step-by-step explanation:

If Alana has 2 1/4 bags of chocolate chips that she wants to use in 3 batches of chocolate chip cookies, then we can say;

2 1/4 bags of cookies = 3 batches of chips

To determine how much of the chocolate chips will she use in each batch of cookies, we can say;

1 bag of cookies = x batches of chips

Equating both expressions

2 1/4 bags of cookies = 3 batches of chips

1 bag of cookies = x batches of chips

Cross multiply

2 1/4 x = 3

9/4 x = 3

9x/4 = 3

9x = 12

x = 12/9

x = 4/3

x = 1 1/3

Hence Alana will need 1 1/3 bags of chocolate chips

#10 -1/3m - 7 = 5 Solve the equation
Dima020 [189]
We have the following equation:
 -1/3m - 7 = 5
 From here, we must clear the value of m.
 We have then:
 -1/3m = 5 + 7
 -1/3m = 12
 1/3m = -12
 m = - (3) * (12)
 m = -36
 Answer:

The value of m is:

m = -36
