Los cotransportadores son proteínas transmembranales que forman parte del transporte activo. Estas proteínas acoplan el movimiento de una molécula o ion en contra de su gradiente de concentración con el movimiento de uno o más iones cotransportadores bajo su gradiente de concentración, permitiendo así el paso de moléculas grandes como la glucosa al interior de la célula que por transporte pasivo no sería posible introducir. Los hay de dos tipos:

Simportadores: Son moléculas transmembranales involucran el movimiento de dos o más iones diferentes a través de la membrana fosfolipídica de la membrana en la misma dirección. Generalmente los iones se mueven bajo el gradiente electroquímico permitiendo que la otra molécula se mueva en contra del gradiente de concentración.

Antiportadores: Son moléculas transmembranales que involucran el movimiento de dos o más iones diferentes a través de la membrana fosfolipídica en direcciones opuestas, donde una especie del soluto se mueve a favor del gradiente electroquímico, permitiendo a las demás especies un movimiento en contra de su gradiente de concentración.

Los cotransportadores al ser parte del transporte activo requieren uso de ATP para llevarse a cabo.
