Later, they established a House of Burgesses as a representative group for Virginia. This group originally just advised the governor, but then gained more powers, such as taxes. Charles, I made Virginia a royal colony after few more years, establishing himself in charge of Virginia. A royal governor was appointed to see out the colony. The House of Burgesses gained more powers at this time such to do with the church, military, and taxes. This royal colony lasted beyond 1763 to 1776.
