In 1947, President Harry S. Truman of the United States, in his bid to prevent or stop the encroachment of communism, pledged that the United States would give a helping hand to any nation resisting communism, by providing political, economic and military operations. Thus, this policy of containment is termed as Truman's Doctrine.
However, there is a divisive concern within the Truman administration as to whether ""containment"" should be a confrontation approach or a cooperation approach.
