You can motivate them by making small goals they can accomplish when playing sports. You could also explain the positive and fun parts of sports.

Personally, I didn't like to play basketball before because I thought it was too difficult. However, my teacher convinced me that basketball isn't always boring and explained all the different parts of basketball to me.

Make it fun and enjoyable if it’s boring hardcore and strict they aren’t going to want to do it, it will become a burden and they will probably end up hating the activity. Also base it off of interest dont throw them into something they have expressed no interest in, and just because they already played one type of sport doesn’t mean that will end up being the sport for them. Lastly if it is your friend help them pick something that you could do together if your doing it with them they may be more motivated to do the activity because they are not alone. Hope this helps!!!
