(I NEED HELP) What does the flashback on pages 30-34 teach us about the overall plot and section of the book "the outsiders"

I do not have the story in front of me, If I do remember, this is Chapter 2 in the story, and the flashback was when Johnny got beat up by the gang of Socs. This teaches the reader overall, that the Socs were the antagonists of the story and that during the story, they would have to overcome the Socs.
