The objective of the experiment is to see if the multivitamin improves short term memory. The population could be the set of all adults in a certain country. The experimental group is the group that gets the multivitamin, while the control group gets a placebo (often just a sugar pill). The groups are usually split 50/50 but they are not always entirely perfectly equal groups. One sample procedure would be to put names into a computer and have the names randomly selected, to determine who goes into the experimental group or the control group.
