Melting rate of ice - independent variable

The independent variable is therefore purposely used to depict or show changes in the dependent variable. The dependent variable is the measured variable whose behavior or output lies on the value of the independent variable.

In the scenario above, the dependent variable is the increase in water level,as it is what is being measured. And it is dependent on the Melting rate of ice, which is the independent variable.

That is change in water level in the cup, depends on the rate at which ice melts
