<em>"An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" </em>is a short story written by American author Ambrose Bierce that was first published on July 13th, 1890. The author uses foreshadowing or flashback to represent and accentuate the gap between reality and illusion that spreads through out the whole story. Bierce uses this technique to guide the reader through the plot, but also to make sure that the reader is surprised when the final revelation about Farquar is known. By using foreshadowing, the author makes the reader question if what it is being told is part of reality or merely and illusion.

Explain how Ambrose Bierce's use of foreshadowing or flashback influence "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge."

Answer: Bierce's use of foreshadowing or flashback influence in "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is very subtle. He indicates the gap of reality and illusion that widens throughout the story. He does so by describing his characters perceptions as they seem to him as opposed to how they truly are.

I hope it helps, Regards.

Hi, I’m Lena and I will be answering your question to the best of my ability. If you have any further questions after my answer, do not hesitate to ask me! ツ

♡ Let’s look at the main important thing(s) that will lead you in the correct path.

♥ Key words. You should always look for key words in a passage. For example, if you see "bounced with joy" in a passage, it will most likely be happy.

♡ Let's solve the question together.

<em>The house dog lay stretched out on the floor, </em>

<em>Where the shade, afternoons, used to steal; </em>

<em>The busy old wife by the open door, </em>

<em>Was turning the spinning wheel,</em>

<em>And the old brass clock on the mantle tree,</em>

<em>Had plodded along to almost three. </em>

♥ Again, look for key words. We can see <em>stretched</em> and <em>shade</em>. That gives us a clue that it's calm. We can also use POE, meaning process of elimination. At first glance, it may seem sad, but there's nothing to be sad about. There's nothing hopeless or too happy, so it's calm.
